What is Viscosupplementation?
Viscosupplementation is a treatment strategy that involves the injection of hyaluronic acid into a joint to supplement the viscosity of the joint fluid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in the synovial fluid surrounding joints. It acts as a lubricant to enable bones to move smoothly over each other and as a shock absorber for joint loads. In sports medicine, viscosupplementation is commonly used as a treatment for arthritis and other joint conditions where the natural hyaluronic acid breaks down.
Viscosupplementation is also often used in the management of osteoarthritis, where the natural hyaluronic acid in the joint has degraded. The injected hyaluronic acid helps to improve the joint’s natural shock-absorbing properties, reduce pain, and improve joint function.
Conditions Treated with Viscosupplementation
- Osteoarthritis: This is the most common condition treated with viscosupplementation. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that results in the breakdown of joint cartilage and the underlying bone. The injected hyaluronic acid helps to improve the joint’s natural shock-absorbing properties, reduce pain, and improve joint function.
- Hip and Shoulder Arthritis: Apart from the knee, viscosupplementation can also be used in the management of arthritis in other joints such as the hip and shoulder. It works by restoring the normal balance between the breakdown and production of hyaluronic acid in the joints.
- Sports Injuries: Athletes with joint injuries can benefit from viscosupplementation. It can help to reduce pain and inflammation and improve joint function, enabling a quicker return to sports activities.
- Degenerative Joint Conditions: Other degenerative joint conditions that result in the degradation of hyaluronic acid in the joints can also be managed with viscosupplementation. It can help to restore the joint’s normal function and reduce symptoms.
The Viscosupplementation Procedure
The viscosupplementation procedure involves a series of injections into the affected joint, usually once a week for three to five weeks. The procedure begins with your specialist cleaning the area around the joint, then a local anaesthetic may be applied to numb the area.
Using a syringe, the doctor injects the hyaluronic acid into the joint. After the injection, patients may be advised to avoid strenuous activities for a few days.
Benefits and Effectiveness of Viscosupplementation
Viscosupplementation has been shown to provide significant benefits for individuals with osteoarthritis and other joint conditions. These include reduced pain, improved mobility, and enhanced quality of life.
The effectiveness of viscosupplementation can vary depending on the individual and the severity of the joint condition. Some may experience relief from symptoms for several months following the procedure.
